Apply

The second application round is now open. The submission deadline is 15 May 2026.

Eligibility Criteria

The application is open to private organisations, research organisations and academia.

Applications must align with the ESA Phi‑Lab UK theme of space‑enabled sustainability technologies and demonstrate the potential to deliver disruptive innovation and high commercial impact. Each application must address one of the following ESA Phi‑Lab UK pillars:

  • Pillar 1: Environmental Sustainability
  • Pillar 2: Space Sustainability
  • Pillar 3: Space Resilience

How to apply

1) Check the requirements

Please download the open call documentation and check the FAQ’s and make sure that your project meets the requirements of the call.

2) Expression of interest

Complete the optional expression of interest form by 17 April 2026 and benefit from our feedback. We will aim to reply within 3 business days.

3) Engage with the ESA Phi-Lab UK partners

Applicants who wish to explore support from ESA Phi‑Lab UK partners should engage with them by 24 April 2026, to allow adequate time for discussion of the proposed application and any potential support. Please note that initial enquiries received after this date may not be considered.

4) Pre-submission draft proposal review

Following completion of the expression of interest, applicants will be encouraged to submit a draft proposal for a light‑touch review. This review will provide high‑level feedback on areas for improvement and an initial check for obvious non‑compliance with the call requirements.

The pre‑submission review is advisory only and does not constitute an assessment of the proposal, nor does it influence the outcome of the formal evaluation. Applicants remain solely responsible for ensuring the completeness and compliance of their final submission.

5) Apply for our program

Fill out the research proposal application template and send it to esaphilab@stfc.ac.uk before the deadline.

6) Evaluation process

Applications passing the tender opening board will be invited for presentations at the ESA Phi-Lab UK tender evaluation board which will take place in June.
